Andrew Smith
Guitars - Vocals
Andrew has been part of Mainland since it crawled out of the marsh
in the late 80's and is widely regarded as the "folkie" of the band. Going
through various musical "periods", including violent swings from Latin pop through
to a rather questionable Gregorian miserable chant type of period.
Also taking in mainstream pop and the classics, his current fad lies somewhere in
a Northern Highland bog with Gaelic gouls and tartans as influences!
He describes his guitar role as textural and complimentary to the band's big
sweeping sounds and hopes to explore guitar synthesizers soon.
David Felmingham
Keyboards - Vocals
David is the "Blues bod" of the band and writes a new song
every nineteen years in the face of great traumatic anguish and pain which
everybody laughs at. But do not underestimate this lad: he is the very foundation
of the Mainlandsound. Supply the band a huge P.A. system and you will
hear the massive keyboard building bricks that will knock you over!
Davids main aim, however, is to collect dust on his equipment and to own as
many broken stands, mikes, cases and bits of wire as possible.
David is quite strange, and therefore it is logical that he is a teacher. Ask
him the capital of Scunpipier...
Tim Warnes
Drums - Percussion
Tim is the undisputed mother of Mainland. As well as
being creative on the skins, he irons a mean shirt and is always tidying the
Mainland shed. He insists on cooking all the food when the others decide
on a band tuck-in...
...Unfortunately, all of this is untrue apart from the drum bit!
Tim, in effect, founded Mainland and is the driving force behind its
activities. The drums are big and the sound is big, but obviously with a
fully dimensional sound such as the band has, a pipsqueak hitting a tin is
hardly the ticket!
Tim drives a hard bargain, but is a deary on the dance floor!
Jeanette Disney
Lead Vocals
Jeanette, like Paul, is a new bit of Mainland. After
considering lucrative offers from other bands and ensembles, she decided it
was time to not earn any money, be at the mercy of critics and generally begin
a life of misery, pain and personal strife... but as it happens she and Tim get
on well!
Much material was obviously written before Jeanette joined, but with her
powerful and creative style some songs have been reinvented and the others are
all agreed that the vocal end of the band has never been so strong. Jeanette is
also keen to provide input for new compositions and lyrics which, again, has
given a new angle to the band.
Jan... keep those bellows blasting. She's always the last at the bar on
Mainlandreal ale binges - slightly bonkers but alwasys the first to
get the beers in. Cheers love, mines a pint of lager - again!
Paul Swatman
Bass Guitar
Paul joined the band in '98 and is now fully involved with
writing and arrangements. Gradually slotting in with Tim's drums, his own
interpretations of older Mainland compositions has given the band a
solid and powerful drive with an inventive texture which in the past was
sometimes lacking.
Now the Bass is a creative force in itself... clever bugger!
One very important aspect of Pauls contribution to Mainland is that he
understands all manner of things that happen under the bonnet of a car. This
makes David very happy, who has no concept of this area at all.
Good old Paul, he is of the smouldering eyelash (lock up the vicar's daughter),
a decent type of chap who will often be pushed to the front og queues when
confronted by marauding undesirables. A lovely boy... please check the old
distributer and remember... everything starts in 'A'.
