The Sepia

Jack Granite here with yet another update on the busy and manic life that is The Sepia!

The group were interviewed on Thursday 15th Feb by SouthCity FM radio (107.8) in Southampton, Hampshire, UK for their 'In Session' programme. A different part of the interview will be broadcast every night next week along with different tracks from the talented trio. For those of you not able to receive the station it is anticipated that the interview will be available on The Sepia web site (http://www.the-sepia.co.uk) very soon.

Immediately after the interview they then endured the freezing South Coast weather for a two and a half hour photo shoot on location (it's a rarity to get them all together at the same time!) so expect some new pictures to be hitting the web site soon.

There is so much happening at Sepia HQ at the moment that no doubt I will be back very soon with yet more news! Until then...

Premature rock stars - the rockumentary

Bristol is set to host the premiere of a highly unusual "rockumentary" which has been made in the city. Utilising an array of local talent, the film features Bristol's up and coming alternative pop stars INSEMINATORS. In what is being seen as a innovative approach, the band got together with independent film maker Mike Latto to produce 'Premature Pop Stars', a 40 minute film which documents the inner workings of an as-yet unsigned band. The film is an intriguing, hilarious and unflinching observation of a band on the bottom rung of the pop'n'roll ladder, trying to make it to the top. It also features a promotional video for one of the band's latest songs 'The Light and I'.

PREMATURE POP STARS will receive its premiere on Friday 23rd March 2001 at the Cube Cinema in Bristol. As well as the screening, Inseminators will perform a short acoustic set and a full electric set with projections either side of the showing, while DJ Leather Apron (aka Probe Mantis from Aspects) will be keeping the evening flowing with arousing breakbeat. The ever-inventive band has also arranged a live internet streaming of the evening's events via the Cube website - www.cubecinema.com. The unique event is already generating a great deal of interest from the local scene and from industry quarters and with a high demand expected, it's shaping up to be a sell out evening.

Inseminators are Duncan Fleming (vocals), Simon Cochrane (guitars), Rich Perks (drums), and Daz Wilde (bass guitar). The band limited themselves to select live appearences in 2000 preferring to concentrate on writing and recording new material as well as developing their live set. This year will see an increase in live work and also build on the interest being shown in their new CD.

Mike Latto is an up and coming independent filmmaker and lecturer specialising in documentaries. His works, which have been well received at several film festivals, are many and varied; they include 'The British Avant-Garde' and 'Amateur British Wrestling'. He is presently filming on location in Barcelona for his next release with a working title of 'Salvador Dali'. Mike has recently been commissioned to produce a documentary for Sky Television and there is also interest from Channel 4 in one of his documentaries.

This could well be the strangest introduction to a band we have ever been sent:

I was on my way to work, sitting on an underground train, when I noticed this man. He was about forty years old. Wearing a worn-out jacket. Although he wasn’t what you might call "gorgeous" or anything, there was something about his look. Maybe it was the twinkle in his eye. Or the crooked slant of his nose. I don’t know, but something about him began to obsess me.

I tried not to let him see me looking. The train was moving into the next station. I glanced up - he was getting off! I watched him walk slowly and confidently down the platform. I don’t know why, but I suddenly got the idea into my head he was thinking about me. Maybe it was that quick glance from his dark bluey-grey eyes. He had looked at me. Out of everyone in the carriage, he had looked at me. Had he noticed me looking at him? Before I could stop myself, I jumped through the closing doors.

I was following him down this busy street thinking, "What the hell am I doing? I’m going to be late for work! I must be losing it!" I had to make excuses to myself, like: "It’s okay, I’m just a really curious person." Or "What’s the harm in it? - it’s just a crazy adventure - people should go with their instincts more often. But I knew I was just being an idiot.

He entered this scruffy café with steamed-up windows and not enough space for its’ dozen or so morning coffee drinkers. I followed him in and looked around in vain for somewhere to sit. This was awkward. Not so for him - apparently he was meeting someone and immediately sat down at a table where this girl was already sitting. I presumed the person was a girl, because she had her back to me and all I could see of her above the high-backed bench was long, straight, dark hair.

An old guy in workman’s overalls took pity on me and offered me a seat by the window. I sat there for a while, watching the man talking to the girl with the straight hair. The dull reality of my little adventure was sinking in - he was just an ordinary guy, meeting his ordinary girlfriend for coffee, and sitting here watching him was going to be as boring as hell. I climbed off my stool. I could still get to work and be excusably late. At the door, I turned for one last glance. I just caught a glimpse her handing him an envelope before I found myself back in the busy street. You see? Just an ordinary couple handing each other envelopes.

I hurried back into the café. Made my way back to my seat, trying to look like I’d forgotten something. The man had opened the envelope and was counting the money inside. It looked like quite a wad of notes. He put the money into the inside pocket of his worn-out jacket. Now, when he spoke to the girl, his brow jutted forward, like he was saying something important, like he was stressing something very, very important. The girl nodded. She kept nodding like a puppy until he finished talking. Then he reached under his sweat-shirt and from some hidden place pulled out a slip of paper. He handed the slip of paper to the girl, who accepted it eagerly. Without waiting for her reaction, he got up and walked out of the café, leaving his coffee untouched.

I immediately followed after him. Not worrying this time of my madness, as my mind was possessed totally by a hunger for knowledge. Unexpectedly, he stopped at the edge of the pavement and hailed a cab. This was it. If he got into that cab, I would certainly never see him again. A cab had pulled up. He had the door open and was pausing to talk to the driver. I couldn’t help myself: "Hey!" I cried out. But my voice was just another unremarkable note in the music of urban noises. I pushed through the oncoming pedestrians, "Hey, wait a minute!" This time my melody registered. He turned and saw me. Perhaps he even recognized me as the girl in the train. Maybe be he wished he could’ve stopped and got to know me.

Whatever. All I know is he jumped into the cab and I never saw him again. But as the cab pulled away, he rolled down the window and I saw his hand let go of something. I ran to the spot. Found a little slip of paper fluttering down towards the pavement. I snatched it before it hit the dirt. I held it carefully in my hands, like the girl with straight hair had done. I unfolded it. There was a sentence printed on one side. It said, "Are You MY Kind of Beautiful?"

"Is that it?!" I screamed inside. "Is that it?!" I screamed outside. "Have I come all this way just to flatter some guy’s inflated vanity?"

"Flip it over." Said a voice. I turned. It was the girl from the café. The girl with long, dark, straight hair. She smiled and continued down the street.

I looked back at the slip of paper in my hand. I turned it over...

Job Done on the radio

Followers of Job Done may have heard Phil and Paul from the band being interviewed on BBC Essex on Tuesday 30 January. Steve Scruton invited us into the studio to talk about and play some material from our recent live promo CD.

In between the general chat, Steve played a good proportion of three tracks, one of which was Steve’s favourite "How Time Flies", a sample of which can be found by visiting the Tracks page on our website at www.jobdoneonline.com. Steve was particularly impressed by the fact that the CD was recorded totally live and without any frills.

One of the questions he asked Phil was "who do you sound like?" As yet, we don’t know ourselves but when you listen to the tracks on the website, you can decide for yourselves! Don’t forget to check the KlubKat gig guide to find out where we’re playing next.
