it was dark at nine last night. i think i've missed the summer, and it scares me. at least we've been keeping busy; missing out on sun, sleep and occassionally any form of nourishment besides the godsend that was Happy Shopper Broken Biscuits one muggy June night with 85p in our collective pocket, to bring you our forthcoming single, GOOD LUCK OLIVIA...

Released on NYC RECORDS in early November, it's backed with THE DARK STUFF and INTO THE FIRE, and should be in a record shop near you soon at the pithy price of £1.99... fate permitting, we should be heading out across Britain in October on our debut national tour, too... so if you're one of the kindly souls who's written asking for tapes from Scotland or Bognor Regis (you know who you are), get in touch and we'll do our best to get NYC's agent to book something nearby... but if you can't wait that long for your next cheap fix, come along to one of the following gigs...

The Return of a Diva

With new music and a dynamic show Marcia Barrett returns to the stages of the world - her world. In 1990 shortly after the break-up of the original BoneyM group, Marcia began laying down tracks at Union Studios, Munich, Germany that would form the basis of her very first solo album. After having fought for many years to be taken seriously as an artist and performer, Marcia couldn't wait to complete her solo project. However it would take nearly a decade to realize her ambition. Her health was failing and she was caught up in battles of another kind. In 1997 after a long fight with Ovarian Cancer and its treatment, which included chemotherapy, Marcia met up with Scott Christina (aka DJ Infiniti) a veteran of the underground music scene. Scott along with Marcia and her husband Marcus Norman James (a former bass player for Eddy Grant) would come to produce the music for this album. But again misfortune was around the corner, another bout of Cancer of the breast. It wasn't until 1998/99 that SURVIVAL the album would be completed. Amongst the seasoned musicians who contributed include well-known saxophonist Clarence Clemons (of Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin fame) and Johan Daansen who played on many of the Boney M. tracks. SURVIVAL is a deeply intense very personal piece of work based on Marcia's recent past. Though the songs are anything but depressing, rather they are full of spirit and hope. She elegantly moves from housy dance tracks, to reggae from rock to ballads. Melding strong hooks, melodies and choruses, mature lyrics and powerful dance beats this record will not only stand the test of time but will shine above all others of its type. Her repertoire for the live shows is a energetic combination of her own material from SURVIVAL and the highlights from her Boney M career. Marcia Barrett of Boney M. live in concert is an experience not to be missed and will liven up any event !

Born in Jamaica and raised and educated in England, Marcia Barrett first found fame as a solo performer in Germany in the early 70's. In 1969 Marcia took up an offer to dance in a discotheque near Hamburg. One evening she spontaneously reached for the microphone and sang Oh Happy Day, never realising that it would be the start of a phenomenal world wide career. For the next five years she toured around Germany performing her repertoire which included Belfast (a song that was specially written for her and later a Boney M. hit).

In 1976 she joined the now legendary Boney M. She spent fifteen years as a vital vocalist and performer for the group, contributing her powerful and distinctive voice to many of their biggest including We Kill The World, Belfast and Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring (that stayed at the top of the UK charts for five weeks) amongst many others as well as the seasonal chart topper Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord. Their albums Take The Heat Off Me, Love For Sale, Oceans Of Fantasy, The Magic Of Boney M., Boonoonoonoos, 10'000 Light Years, Eye Dance and Christmas with Boney M. also hit the top of the charts. Nightflight To Venus became the groups best selling album and one of the best selling albums in Europe ever.

Marcia has accomplished many things in her professional career. With Boney M. she sold in excess of 150 million records and collected more than 800 golden, platinum, and silver discs as well as numerous awards. She has twice appeared in the Guiness book of records, pertaining to record sales. Marcia also had the distinct honour of performing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Boney M. also became the very first pop group from the West to perform in the then Soviet Union. At the end of their career Boney M. had fifteen Nr 1 chart hits and countless other hits around the world.

In 1999 the new BONEY M. 2000 remix CD, yeilded no fewer than three hit singles, Ma Baker, Carribean Night Fever and Daddy Cool 99. Now at the start of a new century Marcia Barrett is also back !
