A2A Amsterdam music conference - Update

Demilliac

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Demilliac has taken Switzerland by storm with the release of his critically acclaimed self produced debut album "peace of a cruising rhythm" (dist. in Switzerland by EMI Records), which propelled him to the forefront of the rock scene (Montreux Jazz Festival, Paleo, Gampel, etc.). Demilliac makes melodic and contemporary rocksongs whereby his powerful and highly emotional voice is the most charismatic element. His first single "climbing the vine" stayed in the Swiss radio airplay charts for over 12 weeks.

Demilliac will be playing on October 17 at 10p.m. at the Meander club of Amsterdam as part as the A2A Access to Amsterdam International Music & Media Conference. More info on this event is available on www.a2amusic.com and/or http://a2a.kindamuzik.net

Giel Beelen (Radio 3FM): ‘You really sound great, no kiddin’
Arjen Grolleman (Radio Kink FM): ‘This is something special, I’m impressed’

Carabao

We are very proud and happy to inform you that the Thai superband CARABAO is coming to play in Amsterdam, the Melkweg - the Max! on thursday, October 18-th from 17.00 till 19.00 . They will play with the full nine-member-band [which has four guitarists and two percussionists] a two hour full show ! Formed in the 70's by Ad and Keo, Carabao [waterbuffalo] released their first album in '81. Through the years Lek, Thierry and Oad joined the band and a constant success was the result, due to the socially, politically and environmentally engaged lyrics, combined with the very danceable rythm of "saam-cha". This rythm is based on the local Thai acoustic folk-music [plaeng peua chivit] combined with rock and reggae and became a rythm on it's own! Every year at least one album was released and although the Thai government did not appreciate all songs [of every album one or two songs were banned from tv/radio] everyone in the 60-million-people-country -from middle-class-Bangkokians to students and even all farmers- know their music and can sing along with their songs! Using music as a tool, Carabao speaks of the ordinairy person in down-to-earth songs with mass appeal and therefor bridging gaps between different groups in the country.

Songdog

the acoustic-based 3-piece with dark, lyrically-rich songs are playing at FANTASIO, Prins Hendrikkade 142, THURSDAY 18 OCTOBER (on stage 10pm)

Their debut album 'The Way Of The World' was released in the UK in June and received great reviews, particularly from Uncut magazine, who featured a track from the album as opening track on their August covermount CD:

"..a compelling collection of dislocated, defiant and erotic songs that echo [their] principal influences - Brel, the Beat poets, Dylan, Leonard Cohen - without compromising the often startling originality of [their] own vision." Uncut

"In a world of safe singer-songwriters, this is a bravely leftfield album." The Independent

"The Alt.Folk movement has many great songwriters, but it can be awfully sexless. This is where Songdog come in." The Times

"...12 tracks of darkly heartfelt lyricism..." Evening Standard

"Dark and bitter balladry" Time Out

"…a thing of wonder capable of slipping comfortably from lust to intimate anguish in the space of a few bars…." Record Collector

" . . . expressive, earthy and strong . . " Toronto Star, Canada

Experience this original artist in her favorite playground - the live stage! Lisa writes melodic, passionate songs exploring the human experience and delivers them with guts and sincerity.

" . . . a lush soundscape of provocative melody and dramatic harmony . . . " Dave Murphy, HMV Independent Music Buyer, Canada

Lisa lives, writes, sings, plays piano and saxophone with sensuality and joi de vivre. She often calls upon the gypsy half of her heritage for inspiration, using eastern influences to spice up her Contemporary Pop/Roots sound. Some fans call it 'international music' and others have described it as 'exotic pop'.

Lisa has released one full length CD, 'this is what it sounds like' and two videos, on her independent label, Imaginit Music. Positive response from radio airplay in the Benelux means her CD should be available soon in Europe. She'll be performing at A2A with the same innovative band featured on her commercial releases which includes some of Canada's hottest musicians on Cello, Bass and Drums / World Percussion.

CD and promotional materials will be available at the CIRPA booth at the conference as well as at the showcase. Lisa is very approachable and friendly so don't hesitate to seek her out after the showcase and during the conference. If you have difficulty finding her, please email to the HOTMAIL address below and she will be checking during the conference.

Norwegian Music is in motion. More and more people are discovering that this Northern outpost can offer more than just oil and beautiful fjords. Like neighboring countries Finland Sweden and Iceland, Norway is home to a thriving music scene.

One of the rock bands that stands out in the crowd is Bigbang (Warner Music). The band headed by former pro skateboarder Oystein Greni reached no two on the Norwegian charts with their first album "Clouds Rolling By" on Warner Music last autumn. Their classic but fresh sound and explosive live performances have made them a big favorite with the concert audience.

They rocked Popkomm in August to the extend that several A&R's, managements and agents got in contact with the band to discuss contracts.

Bigbang is doing two important gigs this autumn:

20/10. at 23.00 : A2A - Winston International Club, Amsterdam
21/11. at 22.00 : Barfly, 109x Regents Park Road, London.

But what really sets Bigbang apart from most contemporary bands today is the fact that these guys really know how to play their instruments, sing, write songs, lift the audience to ecstatic heights and... keep them there!
