UPCOMING CD FROM JOHNNY J BLAIR
|
SNAPSHOTS is the next CD project by JJB. It is a collection of recordings
from concerts, loft space rehearsals, studios and TV broadcasts in
California, Michigan and Pennsylvania. JJB reports, "A lobby of listeners
suggested a project of 'live music' and organic recordings where a
passionate performance wasn't framed by a lot of 'production.' I love
production, and that's an art unto itself. But some people would like the
songs without a lot of dress-up."
On some of the live cuts, audio anomolies-like audience chats, espresso
machines, etcetera-are left in to capture the feel of the event. He
explains, "I could've waited for 'perfect,' but at some of these gigs the
audiences were so 'on' I had to leave in the action." The non-concert
recordings use few effects, instruments and overdubs. "I even whipped out
the accordion Richard Chase gave me." he adds.
Much of SNAPSHOTS sums up his current live set, with energetic gospel
chestnuts like "Nobody's Fault but Mine" and "Workin' on a Building" listed
with acoustic versions of original songs from FIRE ("Throw the First
Stone") and other albums ("Weirder Than Money"). Cover tunes include a
funky, gospel-fied slide guitar take on Stephen Stills' "For What It's
Worth" and Patti Smith's "Dancin' Barefoot." Offstage, he presents
"Unresolved (Graham Greene's Script for Laurel & Hardy)," "Desert Ruby,"
"Like a Father to a Son" (recalling Beach Boys in their SMILEY SMILE/WILD
HONEY minimalism) and a sweeping instrumental, "Steinbeck Found the Valley."
Release target for SNAPSHOTS is late November (special offer for advanced
orders being issued by separate e-mail).
