AFRICAN ACOUSTIC AND ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC FROM YANJU

Yanju, an African musician from London, UK has released his brand new CD "IWA".
The album contains 10 tracks of some really eclectic synthesis of African acoustic and electronic dance music resulting in an edgy club dance music dubbed African techno. Yanju’s lyrics, whose vocals are originally and poetically colored with technology, are sung in English and Yoruba, one of the most spoken Nigerian languages. "This is amazing," freelance critic John Emerald writes. "So many different worlds, yet so firmly presented art".

Yanju began composing music before he was twelve years old. His music career began at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, where he joined the “Phaime band” as a back up singer and principal songwriter whilst studying Performing Arts. Yanju has performed at the annual “Vibrations Festival”, London, featuring JJC and the 419 (2004) and Omar (2003).Yanju is currently a resident performer in “Mycenae house”, Blackheath, London. His original compositions have become anthems and favourites amongst the Mycenae house regulars.

"I see myself as a musician whose music speaks and unites the consciousness of a world audience," Yanju says. "It is for this reason that I have decided to fuse African and Western music genres together. In essence my music represents the proverbial ideal mirror we all as humans strive to achieve which ultimately is a peaceful co existence."

Full of catchy tunes, where syncopated African rhythms crisscross techno beats effortlessly, "IWA" is characterized by an unusual and uncompromising melting pot of polyrhythmic sounds and Western synthesised beats, where the two musical cultures are amazingly respected and recognizable in such a way that one never dominates the other.

THE BROWN INDIAN BAND

The Brown Indian Band has been formed by virtuoso bassplayer Colin D'Cruz and features Indian classical musicians in concert with jazz musicians. Indian classical music is similar to jazz in the sense that they both involve musical improvisation. Whereas Indian classical music is linear, using just one scale (raga) to improvise within a composition, jazz offers a much broader palette for improvisation with multiple scales used to improvise through complex harmonies.

Indian classical music however, has some of the world's most complex rhythm structures and quarter tones that take the sound of music way beyond the western twelve tone scale. The Brown Indian Band incorporates the best of both forms of music to create a very funky sound of world music. The band has floating personnel that very often features international jazz artistes alongside legendry Indian classical musicians. NEW SINGLE BY BRANDY - 'AFRODISIAC'

'Afrodisiac', is the new single by stunning soul sensation, Brandy. Set for release through Atlantic Records (formerly eastwest) on October 4th, it is the follow up track to her recent UK top 10 smash, the Kanye West produced 'Talk About Our Love' also nominated for an MTV Video Music Award (Best RnB), this year. 'Afrodisiac', the Timbaland produced album title track, is the second single to be lifted from her fourth collection of songs and first new music since her 2002 Full Moon set.

Already a hit in the clubs, 'Afrodisiac' is enjoying radio support from the likes of Trevor Nelson and Steve Sutherland. The video produced by Matthew Rolston (Mary J Blige, Maxwell, Madonna) features a very sexy Brandy who is very much in control.

Brandy's album AFRODISIAC is her most personal work to date. With Timbaland steering the sonic grooves, a number of other studio wizards lend their production talents including Kanye West, longtime Timbaland collaborator Walter Millsap III who also co-wrote a number of the album's songs, Atlanta's world-renowned Organized Noize Productions (TLC, OutKast, Ludacris), and Ron "Nephew" Feemster (Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z) & Big Chuck (Jay-Z).

Among AFRODISIAC'S many highlights is 'I Tried' inspired by Britain's very own Coldplay. The track incorporates lyrics from the group's 'Sparks' (found on their debut album, PARACHUTES) as well as a sample extracted from another British group, Iron Maiden. Raw and provocative, the track is among Brandy's favorite songs on the record. "You can hear the experience,"
she says. "It's about me listening to the Coldplay record at home, by myself, reflecting on what's happened to me and my relationship." Brandy's affection for Coldplay can also be heard on "Should I Go," which includes elements of the band's classic 'Clocks.'

Since making her eastwest/Atlantic debut a decade ago at the tender age of 15, Brandy has been the consummate modern artist. She is a charismatic and multi-talented performer whose gifts span the creative spectrum. Now, with her eagerly anticipated new album, AFRODISIAC, the Grammy Award-winning star has put the focus back on her true passion - music.

10000 Things have had a great year and have been pricking up ears all over the UK, this month also sees the release of the manic rock'n'rollers second single, 'Titanium' on Domino. Wrath Records is a great independent label who have just completed their year-long monthly singles club seeing releases from the likes of Les Flames!, Beachbuggy and Chris T-T and the raw blast of The Scaramanga Six themselves. Vib Gyor's epic, layered balladry could well see them join the tide of Leeds' bands who've been signed to majors recently while Cardboy Cowboy's self-produced country tinged album is getting raved about in Leeds. Samsa (stripped to a duo for this gig) are former Bright Young Things and A Destructive Issue are a blazing young Emo / Screamcore outfit from the edge of town. The ticket will also get you entry to our Hull launch gig on the 14th and our 2nd Birthday party in Sheffield on the 23rd. Come down. It'll be fun.

SANDMAN HULL 'LAUNCH' PARTY With FONDA 500 / THE FAVOURS / TURISMO / EMMA RUGG / LAST PEOPLE ON EARTH + live video mixing from Scratchpole @ THE NEW ADELPHI, DE GRAY ST., HULL - THURSDAY 14TH OCTOBER 7.30pm - 11.30pm, #5 A mere 7 months down the line and Sandman Hull is finally ready for its 'launch' gig and it can make a fair claim to being the best line-up in town. Inspired pop lunatics, Fonda 500 are currently riding high in the MTV charts with their song Simon's Magic Beard and are set to release 15 track EP (?!) ABCDELP this month. Turismo have built up a cracking live reputation round town for their gigs as have The Favours with their driving punky sound and guitar pop inspired male/female vocals. Emma Rugg has taken her singer/songwriting as far a field as the States and it's a good time to catch Last People On Earths' soulful summery shimmer before winter sets in.

SANDMAN SHEFFIELD'S 2ND BIRTHDAY PARTY With HOGGBOY / THE SOLUTION / GLEDHILL / THE UNFOLDS / YAMAGUCHI / PORLOCK + live video mixing from Scratchpole + DJs Nick Le Citrus & Joey + Cocktail Rockers @ CLUB .ZERO, 14-16 MATILDA ST., SHEFFIELD - SATURDAY 23RD OCTOBER 8pm - 2am, #5 The starting point for Sandman magazine is beginning to toddle and, again, is putting on a great line-up to celebrate. Hoggboy have been rock'n'rolling around the continent for the last couple of years and have the follow up to 2002's 'Or8?' (think about it) just about to come out. The Solution and, in particular, frontman Hudi have one of the most explosive live shows in the city while The Unfolds have quietly (well, not actually very quietly) been coming up on the rails with some prestigious UK gigs. Yamaguchi mix bowler hats, electronica and rock to fine effect (watch out for the hairdryer) while David Gledhill's eponymous outfit will be famous this time next year, guaranteed. Porlock were recent Ones To Watch and on form can be a hypnotic blend of Stereolab and beatpop. Look out for special guests
