WHAT IS A2A?
By day - A2A is a marketing and education based music conference offering information and support to all levels of the music industry. Panel and workshop topics will include the basics of the music business (contracts, publishing, creating a business) as well as debate and discussion of current trends in live music, recording and new technology. A2A will host a three day trade show featuring representatives from most European territories and other international organizations and businesses. Each day, the trade show will feature an hour long cocktail party hosted by different A2A sponsors. All panels, work-shops and clinics will be conducted in English unless specific to the Dutch music business. By night - A2A is about music. For four nights, the A2A Music Showcase will be held on 20 stages around the heart of Amsterdam and feature over 300 artists of all styles from around the world. Showcases will feature a mixture of established artists and the top future stars from around the world. A2A showcasing artists will perform for an audience of music industry professionals, media and music fans. There will be room in each venue for a limited number of general admission tickets. Showcase entry is open until July 1 and confirmed showcase artists will be notified no later than August 1, 2001. Showcase wristbands for the general public go on sale August 1, 2001. A2A registrants will have access to all A2A showcases.

WHO: Musicians, Music Industry Professionals, Media and Music Industry Support Services. A2A is designed to have an effect on all levels of the music industry. Industry Professionals will have the oppor-tunity to spend quality time with other industry professionals in their field and have complete access to the entire industry represented at A2A. A2A is open to all styles of music.

WHY: Europe is becoming an open market for the music industry with the implementation of the Euro and the ever growing EU. 90% of the worldwide music industry still does not work outside their own national borders. Because of numerous reasons, major and independent artists are unable to distribute their music outside of their home territory. This must change. New and existing technologies have and will change the way music is distributed and have created a much smaller and available world to work in. With the consolidation of the major record companies, the time is right for the independent labels around the world to help create and shape the future of the international recording industry. For the live music industry, A2A is a chance to see several hundred artists that have never been offered to you before and meet the agents and managers behind these great artists. A2A provides a chance to meet talent buyers from around the world, so you can tell them about your “hot” local artists and find out who brings in the big crowds for them.

GOALS: The #1 goal of A2A is that everyone who participates will become stronger at what they do. We hope they meet the people that can help them expand their business. That can be meeting a new pro-moter, agent, manager, attorney, record label, publisher, journalist, musician or reestablishing a long for-gotten relationship. We do not promise "major label deals" to the showcasing artists, but we do promise that they will have access to the people who can make a difference in their career. Goal #2 is to knock down the borders and help create an environment where music, and the artists that create the music, have a better opportunity to discover the rest of the world. Goal #3 is that you will hear some really great music.

EMMA – EUROPEAN MUSIC MEDIA ALLIANCE

In association with The Netherlands’ leading music magazine, OOR, A2A will launch EMMA - the European Music Media Alliance. This alliance will be dedicated to all activities involved with the produc-tion, promotion and distribution of music magazines, webzines, newsweeklies and fanzines. Hopefully this will, among other things, enable all participants to share content, increase their barter power and reduce their overall operating costs.

The idea to form a European Music Media Alliance (EMMA) has already taken off and is now gaining popularity throughout Europe. Many magazines have already shown great interest and have confirmed their involvement in the formation and realisation of EMMA during A2A, Access to Amsterdam, the International Music and Media conference.

Paul Evers, chief editor of OOR Magazine, is not the only person who envisions a fruitful cooperation between all music magazines and music journalists in Europe. Cristian Tripard, from France, has already created a national publication network in France called PUBL.I.C. Regie. PUBL.I.C. Regie united 26 regional publications ensuring all participants of widespread and efficient distribution means and cut their production costs by a considerable amount. Fortunately, A2A will be able to welcome Cristian and his experience to the EMMA formation meeting.

SUGGESTED TOPICS

- A collective sales office that sells space in all the publications together.
- Collectively set up offices in North America, Asia or anywhere for sales, distribution and marketing.
- Collective buying power. Find the common materials used by all magazines and newspapers and work together to get the price down for everyone. This includes computers, copiers, ink cartridges, paper products, office sup-plies, postage, printing, telephone, shipping, etc.
- Collective barter power. The combined barter value of just one quarter page per issue from each publication per year will create a sizable operating account.
- Collective marketing throughout Europe sponsoring concerts, sporting events, parties, trip giveaways, group exhibit stands at major media and music events.
- Share editorial content whenever possible.
- Create a consultation division that deals with non-European publications that desire entry to the European mar-ketplace. This will create partnerships with publications around the world.
- Create a pan-European publication in English for worldwide distribution that would reflect the music scene from each European territory.

GOALS

- A higher net profit for each business. - Larger circulation or audience for each business.
- Higher exposure and visibility for each territories artists - Higher visibility for each territories music industry
- To be ready for the rapidly changing European marketplace

A2A WOMEN IN MUSIC SYMPOSIUM (WIMS)

A2A: Access To Amsterdam is pleased to announce the first European Women In Music Symposium as part of its International Music & Media Conference in October.

The Symposium will feature six panels and workshops with a focus on issues con-cerning female artists and industry professionals on all levels of the music industry.

Topics include successful Women In The Music Business, Resources For Women In Music, The Female Artist, Mother Rock Star (a workshop on parenting) and a Women In Music Town Hall Meeting. There will also be one on one mentor sessions and a WIMS Keynote banquet on Friday evening. The special WIMS keynote will be announced in mid August. Special WIMS showcases each evening will round out this year’s presentation.

The A2A Women In Music Symposium is an outgrowth of the original Women In Music Symposium held at the LMNOP Music Conference in 1999 and followed up at the ROCKRGRL Music Conference in 2000. A2A Managing Director, Louis Jay Meyers, was a founder and director of these two events. WIMS will now be a reg-ular part of A2A in the future.

Helping coordinate the WIMS portion of A2A are longtime Women In Music advo-cates Annie Melvin (Mother Rock Star/USA), Brenda Kahn (womenrock.com/USA), Sybille Thomzik (rocksie!/DE), Jeff Harlan (St. Louis WIM/USA) and many others.

A full list of panels, panelists and showcasing artists will be available by mid August.

A2A OUTREACH PROJECT

During A2A, as a part of A2A, the A2A Outreach Project aims to provide, approxi-mately five, special education schools in Amsterdam with musical performances by A2Aís attending artists.

These artists will be asked whether they would like to participate, and those who accept, will be off for a couple of hours on the Friday afternoon of the event to these schools (19th October).

The fact that special education schools are faced with tremendous expenses year in, year out means they have little to no money left for school trips even, let alone music lessons. However, it is a well known fact that offering children the opportuni-ty to enjoy, play and create music reeps a multitude of benefits which will manifest themselves in the immediate future as well as throughout the rest of their lives. As A2A will have access to many musicians, A2A hopes to utilise this chance to expose these children to music where the schools cannot.

International artists as well as Dutch artists should participate. At the same time, at least we hope that at least one Dutch artist will accompany the international artists to these schools if only because the children will have difficulties with understand-ing English. This is, of course, an excellent opportunity for artists as well to estab-lish international contacts.

Meanwhile, the participating artists will be able to teach children songs from all over the world and learn Dutch traditionals, for instance, at the same time. The A2A Outreach Project also hopes to collect donations in the form of instru-ments and any other music related items which we can hand to the schools to ensure these schools have access to music throughout the year.

Confirmed participating schools: SO School De Ruimte, De Kleine Prins
Confirmed Artists: David Olney (USA), Ad Vanderveen (NL)
Confirmed Sponsors: Johnny Rabb Drumsticks
