Keb Darge's legendary Deep Funk Vol III
BBE LP/CD020 - Barely Breaking Even Records

If you haven't picked up on this compilation series yet, and real funk is your bag, then this is as good a place to start as any. This third volume may not seem as much of a rosetta stone on unknown funk as the first album, but it's just as crammed full of 100+ rarities.

"The Sissy Walk" by Freedom now reveals where Fatboy Slim got his ideas for "Gangster Tripping" from. Not so much a sample as a sneaky remix.

Worth a mention too is Johny Morrisettes "I'm Hungry", with it's slack saxophone and unimaginable today lyrics, followed by the tasty "What goes around comes around" from Arthur Monday - a rolling funk instrumental. Paul Jackson's tune is slightly let down by it's onomatopoeic refrain, but still swings like anything.

The second disk, as usual, begins to move further along in funk chronology and kicks off with the flute laced groove of "The Dayton Sidewinders", and side 3 closes on form with "Black Furs - Feel the Shock", which is definitely getting into more recognisably 70's territory. Side 4 features some of the best tunes of all, such as the immortal Courtial "Losing you", with it's addictive piano riff.

A sought after soul/funk platter for sure, and not forgetting the cool "Scacy and the sounds of sunshine" track either. For sure, there are a couple of duff tunes here, but the good ones more than compensate. If you've played your James Brown LPs to death or are curious about the sealed world of rare grooves, then this is for you.
