Os Mutantes
Os Mutantes - LP/CD NG44018. Re-issued on Polydor.
At long last they (whatever sinister cabal "they" are) have decided to re-issue the heavily sought after Brazilian group "Os Mutantes", and that is definitely something to celebrate!
A definite influence on modern groups such as "Stereolab", this is a taste of real sixties Brazil recorded against a backdrop of political heavy-handedness and persecution of artists and musicians, which by all accounts is something this band were no strangers to.
One of the shining lights of the Brazilian Tropicalia movement along with artists such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Joyce Moreno and others, this LP is for anyone with a love of non traditional Brazilian music: merging Samba and Bossa rhythms with distorted Fuzz Guitar, echoing percussion, experimental studio techniques and the late sixties sound we all know, but still standing with an extremely individual sound. Literally head and shoulders above some of the best known western music of the period.
Of note is the tune "Mario Fulô". Later played by the sublime Joyce, both versions are worth a look in. The excellently titled "Bat Macumba" stands out as well.
Nearly a perfect LP, and well worth investing in if Brazilian Psyche-rock sounds like your thing. This album improves with every listen until you can't imagine not owning it. Who can tell how long it will be in the shops this time around?
