Last year, Fat Pauly's in Norwich shut down for refurbishment and now boasts a futuristic look but it still keeps it's charm, which I have commented on before. I really think it would not be the same if Fat Pauly's became slick. It still retains its rough around the corners look even with its revamp, although I'm sure they were hoping to get away from that image. Well, I truly believe when things look a bit rough the punters feel it's more their own, it has that home grown feel, so I personally prefer it.

Fat Pauly's is one of the few places that really give everyone a chance, the good the bad and the ugly gets on to that stage, which is a stage to be proud off, not stuck in a corner somewhere and a good height with a decent sound system. This makes it possible for even the most ill equipped band to be able to play. They have also run band competitions in the past, which is good to help put the venue on the map but it's also good to help promote new bands. I really respect this venue for what it does. Fat Pauly's really seems to support the young hopes of the future; this is what I call a true music venue.

The nights are set aside for different things but what you will be guaranteed is that, whichever night you go, there will be music of which most will be live. There are nights for the new bands and they are quite probably on the stage for the first time. The quality here can be erratic but is the bit I respect most. The venue is also well established on the gigging circuit and host touring bands from here and abroad and you, of course, can catch up with your favourite local band. It's not just live music, there are also their all-nighter club nights, which I believe are hugely successful, so I have been told. (I haven't as yet had a chance to check this out)

The venue is spacious, so if you have had enough of the noise, you can still go and have a game of pool on one of their tables or you could wrestle someone for one of the comfy sofas in their "all new comfy sofa bit." which of course I have tried and tested myself and scores top marks on the soft and comfy front. Very nice!

Check out the new Fat Pauly's and reassure yourself that it's still the same as we all know and love.

Editors Note: We hear that Fat Pauly's has now closed it's doors.
