Around 80 bands fought for a place for over a year and the eventual finalists were; Shaft, Universal Love Train and Starpill. The competition was extremely strong and the atmosphere at Fat Pauly's was buzzing. The winning band stood to gain £2000 out of a prize fund of £5000, which is very useful in the pursuit of musical success.
Shaft are no strangers to KlubKat having previously played at one of our Jammin' Nites. They are a very talented Funk Rock band and played well that night. Starpill also were talented and played well that night but both had to settle for their runners up prizes of £750. (Very nice!)
According to my amazing powers of deduction this makes Universal Love Train the winners. They are:- Tazelar : drums, Mark : lead guitar/vocals, Gareth : guitar/backing vocals, Graham : bass guitar/backing vocals. This band stood out from the others with their original songwriting skills. They were also more mature, which showed in their performance, it gave them more confidence and helped them come away from the realms of safe music. This band was off the wall, with their strong harmonies and what I think is a progressive 60's feel but others may disagree. I don't think I can categorise them but I personally really liked their stuff.
On winning, Universal Love Train duly went up to collect their cheque from Paul himself, along with a huge complimentary bottle of champers. Graham, a self confessed 'Formula One' junky, couldn't resist spraying the audience with the bottles precious contents. Such a waste but extremely fun. Unfortunately we don't have a pic of that, due to our photographer guarding his equipment from the expensive shower.
We were able to interview the winner while they were still high on their victory, which, I must say, led to some interesting answers!
KlubKat: "Well, how do you feel?"
U.L.T: "Surprised" "Chuffed" "Over the moon"
KlubKat: "What does winning this money mean to you?"
U.L.T: "We are playing in Dieppe at a two day festival soon, so the money will enable us to travel and continue on a mini tour and play for a wider audience." "We would also like to get a CD writer so we can produce our own CD's."
KlubKat: "How did you prepare for the competition?"
U.L.T: "We did warm up gigs in London as well as practising twice a week, plus any other gigs we were doing." "There is no substitute for hard work!"
KlubKat: "How would you describe your music?"
U.L.T: "Guitars that sparkle and grunt!"
"Eclectic" (No, not electric; eclectic).
KlubKat: "How are you going to celebrate?"
U.L.T: "We're going to consume as much happiness as possible."
KlubKat: "Anything else you would like to add?"
U.L.T: "More cholesterol to yogurt." "A cup of tea!"
KlubKat: "Thanks Guys, we wish you all the best with your plans."
The six bands at the semi finals that didn't get through to the finals were awarded £250 each. Well done to everyone involved, this was the second band competition that Fat Pauly's has held and unfortunately it will probably be the last. A competition that will be sadly missed.
