By The Adder, March 2000

For a band whose members are all still at school, Pornaco have certainly managed to build themselves up something of a following. KlubKat went along to Fat Pauly's in Norwich to see what all the fuss was about, got there with plenty of time to spare, and found that we needed to fight our way through the crowds waiting outside - so I'm guessing that many of you will already know the name of "Pornaco"...

The band, who hail from Norwich, consist of Dan and Dave on Guitar, Starsh on Bass, Steve on Drums and Lee doing the vocals. Although Dave had only been with the group for three weeks at the time of our interview, the rest of the gang have been together since September - so its all the more impressive that they have built up such a following in this short space of time.

Pornaco list their influences as The Food Fighters, Nirvana, 'A' and Symposium. They describe their music as Power Pop/Punk Rock, which we would say was a fair assessment of their style. Every song is a little different, and a number of styles show through - The emphasis is clearly on making punk accessible to more people by varying the sound for a wider audience. Personally, Punk is one of my least favourite styles of music, and yet I actually enjoyed the sound of Pornaco.

In April Pornaco are going to London, and they have more gigs planned in places outside their area such as Colchester.

Interviewing this lot was a bit of a challenge. They seem to cover every corner of the personality spectrum - Dan seems to be the sensible one of the group and then at the other end there is Starsh who kept chipping in with sexual innuendo, pervy questions or just plain surrealism every couple of seconds. But we think we got the lowdown on where they are going, however strange some of the answers may seem...

Ambitions? Everyone has a different view on this one. Dan would like to support 'A' (Also reviewed elsewhere on this site), while Starsh points out how cool it would be to support Lama Farmers. We assume he means the band! Lee would love to play at the Reading festival, which he suggests could be a possibility!

Getting slightly more surreal, Lee would like the band to be sponsored by Sunny Delight and Immodium - and I'm sure no connection is suggested between the two. Dan chips in to say that he would like to live next door to David Groll, and Starsh wants to be on top. Um, take that as you will - there was probably a pause for a full stop somewhere in that last quote.

KlubKat: If we asked you about past highlights for the band, what would you say?
Pornaco: We've been described in the "Evening News" as local, bright hopes. We've also had our website banned from every school and business in the UK thanks to our name - the software locks our site out because it's got "Porn" written all over it!

KlubKat: Anything else you think our readers should know?
Lee: I flashed at about 500 people once, in a production of "Grease" at our High School. Got a bollocking from the headmaster for that one. It was a moony gone wrong!
Starsh: I like Jaffa Cakes. If I mention Jaffa Cakes, will I get free Jaffa Cakes sent to me?
KlubKat: Er, probably not.
Starsh: Is masturbation homosexual sex?
KlubKat: Erm, what?...

And on that note, we have to leave the slightly warped world of these Norwich Future Punks. I'm sure you'll be hearing more of them - but meanwhile, check out their own website http://www.geocities.com/pornaco.
