It is perhaps a little hard to sum up the sound of a band by describing just one of their tunes, but when "Dog Days" arrived in my Inbox I found myself immediately detecting the punk influences in their music.
Upon further listening, however, other influences jump out from the track and take you quite by surprise. Right in the middle, for example, there is a quite excellent guitar riff well worthy of Dire Straits which just begins to hint at the talent behind this four piece Stateside band.
Haven consists of Patrick Best on Vocals and Guitar, Sandy Hendrick on Bass, Brad Townsend on Lead Guitar and Stephen Anderson on Drums. Music like this has to be listened to several times with the bass full up to appreciate all of its subtleties - Haven are keen to stress that they are pushing away from their Grunge influenced early days and heading in new directions, which is clear from the track I listened to. Unfortunately, when the quality of playing is as good as it is here, many reviewers totally miss the lyrics and comment only on the music - but I can honestly say that the vocals manage to fit in properly and the voice talents of Patrick Best are not to be sneered at.
I would suggest you pay a visit to http://www.havenmusic.com the bands website, have a listen to "Dog Days", and you can judge for yourself. I was suitably impressed, as I'm sure you will be.
