I'm sitting here listening to Out Of This World by Uncle Tom and am being bombarded with lots of different influences. The band is a punk/rock pop group with a definite flavour of the Sex Pistols and Nirvana. Their vocalist and songwriter Robert 'Beast' Best leads the band and passes off as a pretty convincing British vocalist - On this point, I have to remind myself that this band are from Los Angeles.

The band rose from the ashes of earlier signed band The Bogus Toms after bad experiences with the record company. They are now learning from their experiences and are moving forward with Uncle Tom. Working alongside Robert 'Beast' Best is Louis Schilling on drums and Fling on bass and vocals. The band has been around for three years now and the experience in the previous band stands them in good stead.

They have laid down some good tracks with enough happening to keep you interested. Their production is simple and uncomplicated and has in my mind the qualities to be able to give the industry a run for their money. Their punk influences are drawn from the 70's, which have melody which frankly modern punk lacks. The band class themselves as 'hard edged power pop rock'. Their music sits closer to old style punk, more than rock but also fits into the pop scene. This lends itself for interesting listening. Punk without the seriousness, punk without the "isn't life crap" aspect - they seem to have a light hearted view on life.

I like their sound and I like their intro's, which does it for me. If a track gets my attention from the start then they've done half the work and what's even better these guys come up with the goods. They have humour, a Sid Vicious sound, quality guitar bits and melody. Certainly not hard core but good stuff.

Uncle Tom are doing it for themselves. Using the net to gain exposure and the control they deserve.

Check out their site at http://home.earthlink.net/~uncletoms and buy the CD to add to your collection. Nice one boys.
