Mr Westoby's Animal Band is something of an oddity, and the same goes for the chaps in it!
I must say I have been an acquaintance of Paul's for quite some time now, and it's no surprise to find him in a peculiar type of band. Their performance is fun and good-natured. I'm reluctant to group them in with any particular style - they play what they enjoy and do it well.
The band isn't just about the music; it's more the people and their personalities. What follows is the interview I did with Paul - you may get a feel of what I'm saying...
KlubKat: OK Paul, who does what?
Paul: Kevin makes the cake, I make the sandwiches, Jimmy Jam James brings the squashes and Mr. Andy brings the knives, forks and spoons!
As you can see, I was off to a flying start. The correct answer to the above question is Kevin: drums and backing vocals, Paul: lead vocals, Jimmy: guitar and vocals and Andy: bass guitar.
KlubKat: How long have you been together?
Paul: Since the beginning of time. Wrong answer. About 2 to 3 months. Correct!
KlubKat: How did you get together?
Paul: We all woke up in the same bed one morning and decided to be in a band. Jimmy was heavy with my child and I was heavy with sarcasm.
I like that!!
KlubKat: So why do you do this?
Paul: it gets us out of the house. We are part of the arts. Art is holding up a mirror to nature, we want to hold nature up to the mirror and comb it's hair so it looks nice. Ah, right Paul.
KlubKat: How would you describe your stuff?
Paul: Obscure covers, but we are planning to produce original and exciting material, to sweeten the jaded palates of East Anglia.
KlubKat: What's your best moment?
Paul: Our best moments are the after rehearsal pints followed by synchronized letching and bum appreciation. Not quite the answer I was after, and so we press on!
KlubKat: Have you any funny incidents?
Paul: No, but we do have traditional joke telling when rehearsing. Most of which are unprintable and very bad.
KlubKat: Who is your audience?
Paul: We are particularly interested in attracting a following of rich spinsters who are happy to court the pink pound! Can we print that?
KlubKat: What's your strangest dream?
Paul: Last night I dreamt that I was sleeping with a fat woman, and she was lovin' it! Can we print that?!?
Jimmy: I had a dream that there was a room full of fat women hitting one another with mallets. Strange!
With that, our interview comes to a close. I personally like the stuff they do and the interview was as entertaining as their set.
