Cobra and Phases
LP/CD on the Too Pure label
Stereolab's latest is a fine album, far stronger than other critics have given it credit for. The usual dreamy French vocals, easy listening and tropicalia elements are joined by an ever greater referentiality to the pioneers of musique concrete. The sounds are subtly mangled and sometimes give way to a deluge of bizarre concrete sounds more often found in the works of Pierre Henry.
This collection of tunes really does benefit from repeat listening and should satisfy newcomers and fans alike, with something even for the avant gardist and it probably wont even offend your parents - no mean task.
Collaborators range from John McEntire to Jim O' Rourke who both bring their trademark sounds to add to this record which has both pop sensibility and depth. How many other people can reference both Abba and Steve Reich in so many minutes.
I endorse this product.
