We stood in the rain (yuk) at the Thurrock Music Festival waiting for 'Through The Red' to set up on the stage. We saw them last year and their lead vocalist left a deep impression on me. This was a metal band with a difference. Not only has Manda an extremely surprising voice, she also doesn't look intimidating or particularly powerful but when she gets going, her voice thunders. The refreshing thing here is that she uses her voice from gentle, to powerful, to roaring and that truly makes the band what it is. I would think she could blast most other vocalists off the stage!
The TTR line up is, as already mentioned, Manda on lead vocals with Brett and Dave on Guitar. Paul can be found on bass and lets not forget Lee on the drums. Since their formation back in 1998, Through the Red has generated a good following on the gig circuit, and also had the privilege of having their music video '11:41' being played on international cable TV, on the show MP3TV, with a simultaneous broadcast on the internet. Through The Red's material has a heavy edge, reminiscing to the metal we know from the 70's and 80's such as 'Motorhead' and 'Metalica' but at the same time they have a lot of nu-metal leanings such as the 'Deftones' and 'Skunk and Anansie' which sets them apart from the crowd! They have released a live demo CD that has received rave reviews and we can look forward to them burning the studio CD that they are planning soon. Through the Red are currently featured on eight compilation CD's so they are already getting noticed by several independent record labels. We are going to hear a lot from this band in the future!
I feel I should also mention how professional this band is. It is very rare for me to be handed what I call a 'bullshit kit' when I go and have a chat with a band, but TTR had one ready. The kit contains information about the bands history and as a reviewer this is really helpful: it means I can write a more rounded review and I don't have to do as much chasing up. So take note all you "big time wanna be's", take a leaf out of the Through The Reds book and always have your own bullshit kit with you at every gig. It's much better for the reviewer to be able to go away with such info.
Keep going TTR, your success is just around the corner!
